Nokia has announced that it will buy the shares of Symbian Limited that it doesn’t own and make it an Open Source platform that is free. The Symbian software was started by Eriicsson, Motorola and Nokia in 1998 and has become a dominant platform to date because of the success of Nokia who currently use it.
It is not free Open Source at the moment however and this is what Nokia plans to do with it. By opening up the platform Nokia is creating a rival to Android. The platform will offer an alternative to developers and innovators looking for something different to Google’s Android.
This is serious news for Android, Nokia is obviously a big player in the mobile industry, and Symbian has been incredibly successful to date. With further partnerships being created by this move with other players such as Sony Ericsson, Motorola and DOCOMO involved in the process the future for mobile open source has shifted again in the incredibly fast way it is moving forward.
