Android Mobile Delayed

by Patrick Martin on June 23, 2008

It looks like the stories of Android being released sooner than we had expected are probably just that- stories.  The WSJ is reporting that Android handsets will be delayed and won’t be released until right at the end of the year, later than many had hoped.

In all honesty we did know that the handsets wouldn’t be released until the second half of the year or even the last quarter but many had hoped that they would come earlier.

Problems seem to be coming from all sides.  It seems the carriers such as Sprint and Nextel have had problems getting the handsets ready for release and there have also been rumblings amongst developers about the fact that Android isn’t as easy for developers to make software for as they would have hoped.  Google seems to continue to be making changes to software that sometimes creates problems for developers integrating their own applications.

In reality it shouldn’t be a surprise.  When many different companies come together to get a product like this out into the market there are bound to be issues in terms of co-operation and integration.

As I keep saying, the competition from the iPhone 3G is very challenging for Android.  The new Android phones will have to be something special to win over the iPhone 3G users who may start developing brand loyalty to Apple, that is if they haven’t already.
