AT&T Open, Android Open, Verizon Open, a Pattern is Emerging…

by Patrick Martin on December 6, 2007

AT&T’s announcement today that they are suddenly open and you can now use any phone on their network really isn’t a big deal. It’s just a nice little piece of public relations, the mobile industry is moving rapidly and a company like AT&T does not want to be seen as being left behind or stuck in old ways.

Open is definitely the buzz word at the moment so it’s no surprise that AT&T used “open” as the keyword of their news. The mobile networks are already open, you can already use an unlocked phone on any network.

Because AT&T are not joining with Google and the others in the Open Handset Alliance they need something to shout about so probably this “news” is just to get them in the news. Anyway, how long will it be before AT&T do actually join the Open Handset Alliance, surely they will have to. AT&T aren’t a company who don’t know what they are doing, it’s a massive organization, they will be looking at this very carefully but surely they can’t lose ground whilst waiting around to see how Android turns out.

Google’s grand plan is to make mobile technology the internet but mobile, the chances are that it will work and AT&T will be there, no question, they won’t make that mistake but will they make the mistake of getting in too late?
