Google are going to give away $10 million in awards to developers who make the best applications on their Android mobile platform. At first the 50 best entrants to the awards will take away $25,000, they will then be able to compete to win ten $275,000 awards or ten $100,000 awards.
There are certainly some real incentives there for hungry talented developers to make some serious money, the competition will be fierce but we are bound to see some great applications come out of it.
Google offers up some suggestions about the types of applications they are looking for such as social networking, gaming, news and location based facilities. This is no real surprise, these are what most of us were expecting to be the key elements of any Android mobile platform. Much of it is about bringing the functions we have on the internet at the moment to mobile devices.
The open source mobile world is starting to look exciting though, I bet there are developers out there who are desperate to get going with ideas about how their applications will work. At least we have the Software Development Kit now and we can really get to see what developers will be able to do.
