Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down in 2009 – Smartphones Up

by Patrick Martin

Mobile phone sales were down in 2009, but sales of Smart Phones were up.

Sales of Smartphones grew 41.1% in the last quarter of 2009 from the same period in 2008 according to research published by Gartner.

The sale of Smartphones has taken a lot of the market away from ordinary mobile phones.  People are wanting phones that can do so much more than they ever used to be able to do.  The number of apps available makes Smartphones the more interesting and often practical option for oridnary users as well as businesses.

The fact that most people have mobile phones means that users are looking for newer technology and new advances in their phones rather than just buying their first phone or getting an upgrade, as used to be the case.  Users will look to the software a platform can offer as well.

In terms of Android Phones, 6.8 million were shipped in 2009 with Android gaining a market share of 3.9%.  Not bad considering the platform was only announced just over 2 years ago.
